A Brand New Chapter
Hey friends,
First, a huge thank you for all the beautiful emails, comments, and replies you’ve sent me recently as I’ve shared this huge life transition. Your support means the world to me and I love that I've been able to connect with many of you.
On Saturday, I worked my very last medical shift. It was surreal. In the morning I was buzzing with excitement and could hardly concentrate. By the afternoon, that excitement turned into a deep nostalgic calm - the knowing that I was about to close the door on the biggest chapter of my life.
The admin lead came to find me, gave me a huge hug in front of everyone, and announced to the patients that it was my last day. They were all so lovely and wished me well. Around 3 p.m., I saw my final patient. As I took their history, I felt a lump in my throat, because I knew that would be the last time I would ever sit in a doctor-patient relationship.
I had my very first patient interaction in 2002 - my first year of medical school.
Twenty-three years later, I had my last.
Me as a brand new baby medical student - 2002
My last ever medical shift - 04th October 2025
Closing this chapter on Saturday felt huge. Overwhelming. Incredibly sad. Beautiful. Peaceful. Literally all of the emotions all at once.
Even though I’ve known for a while that I’d outgrown this identity, it’s still one that shaped me for more than two decades.
There’s a saying I love:
'You must let go of the person you once were, in order to step into who you are becoming.'
Letting go can be painful. It stirs up fear, self-doubt, insecurities - all the 'what ifs.' But it’s also the only way to grow.
I meet so many people who tell me they’d love to quit their jobs and start their own business. When I ask what’s holding them back, it’s almost always fear: fear of the unknown, fear of failure, of taking the path less travelled, of 'derailing from the norm.'
That fear keeps so many stuck in a life they don’t love.
The thing I've come to realise is this:
Change is hard. But so is staying stuck.
You have to choose your hard.
One hard leads to frustration and a deep sense of regret.
The other leads to growth, fulfilment, and a life that feels truly yours.
I’m living proof you can choose the latter, even if you don’t feel ready or perfect. I’ve faced plenty of obstacles and had myriad reasons to stay safe, but step by step, I built the courage to change. If I can do it, so can you - I am 100% certain of that.
So here’s my question for you today:
👉 If you’re craving a better life or dream of your own business, when will you start taking the first small steps?
No one is going to hand you permission. The decision is yours, and that’s the good news! If it's up to you, it means you can do something about it, and that's very empowering!
So, here I am, the first day of stepping into my new chapter. I still continue to feel excited and nervous in equal measure, but intuitively it just feels SO RIGHT. It's like my soul is saying: FINALLY! THANK YOU!! haha. I plan to keep journaling, processing, and celebrating. Next week, I’m off to Paris with my dad! our first time there, and first ride on the Eurostar! It feels like the perfect way to honour this big life shift.
Thank you for being here with me on this journey. It means more than I can say.
If my story has sparked something in you - a desire to finally make a change, I’d love to hear about it. Just hit reply and tell me what chapter you dream of stepping into next. 💛
Here’s to courage, growth, and choosing your hard.
With love,
Marcela
