From Job to Own Business - Real Life Example
As I have been embarking more and more in the world of coaching and business, I have met quite a few people who have either left their main job to set up their own business, or who are currently working on both.
I am noticing that these small businesses (usually made up of a single person - the Director) tend to do really well when they have these things in place:
- There is a story of transformation, which the business person openly shares with their audience
- There is a clear vision of what they do, and who they serve
- They show up consistently (whether that is online, in real life, or both)
- They understand that doing all of these new things IS going to feel very scary, but they continue to show up anyway.
- THEY TAKE ACTION
One of my best friends, Becky Ullah, who I mentioned previously in this newsletter, quit medicine less than a year ago to pursue her dream and passion of being an artist. I have been blown away by what she has accomplished in a short space of time.
She quit medicine, set up her social media accounts and started creating art, all from day one. She also started sharing her story - from burnt out unhappy doctor, to finding herself again through her art. She started working on her art daily, posting consistently on social media, and has been gradually increasing her follower count by sharing her art, sharing about herself, and generally connecting with others in a genuine and transparent way. She has shared with me, and her audience, about the challenges of this journey. Starting something new from scratch can feel absolutely terrifying. Becky has felt this too. However, she hasn’t allowed the fear to stop her from starting and continuing to grow her art business.
She has been creating art consistently, attending art fairs, doing competitions, sharing on social media, attending events, connecting with other artists, learning new techniques and forms, developing herself as an artist and also as a business person, and continuing to take action despite all the inevitable fears that come up. In this short space of time she has already sold quite a lot of her art pieces, and continues to gain traction - she is even taking commissions for bespoke pieces.
I remember when Becky was thinking about starting this new venture, and her fears around failure, about it not working, about no one buying her art. It’s amazing to see how far she has come and how she has been pushing through these barriers, gaining confidence and growing as an artist every single day.
The main thing I have learned from Becky is that she TAKES ACTION. She consistently takes action and she puts herself and her art out there. We cannot underestimate how scary this feels - anyone that has started a business knows this feeling. She continues to take action and the results are already showing. Had she allowed those fears to take over, she would have never started. By taking action and going for her dream, she is spending her days creating gorgeous art, sharing it with the world, making sales and most importantly feeling happy and fulfilled.
So, what is that one thing that you have always wanted to start? What is that business/venture/passion that you wish you had started 5 or 10 years ago? What is holding you back? What is the very first step that you can take to start getting things into motion and gaining momentum?
We have to understand that fear doesn’t go away by thinking about it - it is only by feeling the fear and doing it anyway that we are able to grow and expand outside our comfort zones - and this is where we find the magic.
If you want to feel inspired, see some gorgeous art, and see a real life person working on their dreams on a daily basis, please give Becky a follow on Instagram:
I’m sure Becky would love to have you join her on her journey. She understands how scary it is to change careers, so knowing that she is inspiring others to follow their dreams is very important to her.
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead
With love
Marcela
