I thought medical school would break me. Then I heard this…
I hope your weekend was restful and enjoyable.
Today, I want to tell you about the exact moment my entire perspective on life shifted.
It was my very first week of medical school, back in 2002, and I was sitting in a packed lecture hall, bracing myself for the overwhelming years ahead.
For the two years prior, I had been drowning in pressure, sacrificing sleep, fun, and friendships, pushing myself to breaking point, just to get the perfect grades that would get me into medical school.
I was exhausted. Totally burnt out and riddled with anxiety. I was terrified that this next chapter would demand even more from me and that it would break me.
If secondary school had demanded so much perfection from me, what would medical school be like?
Then, one of my professors walked in and said something that stopped me in my tracks - a statement so simple and yet profound, that I still remember this lecture as if it was yesterday.
At first, I thought, Wait… what? Surely, he can’t be serious?
But looking back, that one lecture changed everything.
Embracing the C Grade
The lecture was called:
🔹 "Embrace the C Grade"
I remember staring at the timetable thinking, What on earth is this?
The lecture was delivered by Mr. Alan Noble, an amazing physiology professor who we would get to know well over the years. But this particular talk had nothing to do with physiology—it was about how to survive medical school (and life) without losing yourself.
He started by saying something that made all of us sit up straight:
'If you spend medical school obsessing over perfect grades, you’ll miss out on what truly matters. You don’t need to prove yourself anymore. Give yourself permission to learn, to grow, to build friendships, to try new things, and to actually live and have fun—because that’s what will make you a better doctor, and a happier person.'
'I don't want you to get A grades'.
Wait… what?!
He continued:
'You’ve worked so hard to get here. You’ve had to get top grades, make huge sacrifices, and push yourself to the limit. But now you’re here, and if you spend the next six years chasing perfect grades, you’ll miss out on some of the most important parts of your university experience and personal growth.'
'If you’re always getting A’s, it means you’re working way too hard and not living enough.'
'Instead, I want you to EMBRACE THE C GRADE—by aiming for C grades, you’ll be able to balance your studies with friendships, new experiences, fun, and personal growth. We need happy, well-rounded doctors—not just learning machines.'
I sat there, in a state of shock.
This was the most unexpected and counterintuitive advice I had ever received.
Am I not supposed to be aiming to be as perfect as possible anymore? It was the complete opposite of all the societal (including family) expectations and pressures I had grown so accustomed to.
Prior to medical school, I had been suffocating under the weight of perfectionism. And now, a professor—a medical school professor—was giving me permission to breathe. Wow.
It wasn’t just a nice mindset shift—it was a crucial turning point that helped me reclaim my wellbeing and start enjoying life again - and a profound lesson that I have carried with me all throughout my life.
I can honestly say that this advice saved me.
I happily embraced the C grade. And instead of drowning in work, I:
✨ Focused on making incredible friends
✨ Said yes to new and amazing experiences
✨ Had a tonne of fun
✨ Lived a full, well-rounded university life
And: Started my journey of unlearning perfectionism.
And guess what? I still became a doctor.
In fact, I don’t think I would have made it through medical school if I hadn’t learned to let go of perfection and give myself permission to be human. I would have buckled under the pressure to be perfect and might have had to quit altogether.
This lesson didn’t just help me survive med school. It shaped how I approach everything in life—including how I run my business.
Why This Matters for Solopreneurs
I see this exact same struggle every single day—not just in medicine, but in business and life.
Solopreneurs tell themselves:
🚫 'I can’t put myself out there until I have the perfect website'
🚫 'I can’t start marketing until I feel more confident'
🚫 'I need to complete more qualifications before I’m good enough'
But here’s the thing: Perfectionism is just fear in disguise.
If you wait until everything is 'perfect' before taking action, you’ll never get started.
💡 What if, instead, you embraced the C grade in business?
✅ Reaching out to a potential client even if you’re not 100% sure what to say. (Because waiting until you have the 'perfect' pitch keeps you stuck.)
✅ Selling your first offer before you have a logo, branding, or fancy graphics. (Because making money doesn’t require a polished business—it requires making an offer!)
✅ Posting a video where you just talk to the camera naturally—no script, no editing, just sharing value. (Because visibility matters more than perfection.)
✅ Going to a networking event alone and introducing yourself, even if it makes you nervous. (Because opportunities come from putting yourself in the room, not waiting until you feel ready.)
The only way to get better at something is to start messy.
So—where are you holding back because you think you need to be perfect?
What’s one tiny step you could take this week, even if it’s a little scrappy?
I’d genuinely love to hear—hit reply and let me know!
