The secret to success? Truly caring about your customers
Hi and Happy Monday! 😊
I hope you had a fantastic weekend and feel ready to embrace the new week. As spring peeks around the corner, I’m reminded of the power of transformation—and today, I want to share one of my most transformative lessons.
A Story from 2018: My Tech Start-Up Journey
Back in 2018, I co-founded a tech start-up with a brilliant idea and a hefty dose of passion. At that time, my understanding of marketing was limited to one thing: getting property tenants through a lettings agent as that was my only business experience. I had no clue about the customer journey or why it mattered.
I spent 12 months building an app, pouring over £70,000 into development alone—plus the living costs and the salary I never took while working full-time on the business. My social media accounts? They were just random posts with no strategy or context. I wasn’t talking to potential customers or building a community; I was simply shouting into the void.
Despite signing up 89 businesses for the app, we struggled to attract customers. We were missing one crucial element: guiding potential customers through the journey—from the moment they become aware of us to when they finally convert and become loyal fans.
That lack of knowledge ended up costing me well over £140,000. It was a hard, but invaluable, lesson on the importance of a well-defined customer journey.
The Customer Journey Framework
Since then, I’ve learned that a successful marketing strategy revolves around a clear, deliberate journey:
Awareness 🔍
This is where visibility is key. A potential customer first learns that you exist and learns about your business.
Interest ❤️
Here, you build trust and start nurturing a relationship. You build an emotional connection with your potential customer.
Consideration 💡
At this stage, your unique selling point and a compelling offer begin to shine. This is when prospects start seriously thinking, 'Could this be for me?' and where you stand out as the obvious choice.
Conversion 🚀
The 'aha' moment when the customer takes action. A strong call to action makes all the difference.
Retention 🌟
This is not about closing a sale; it’s about opening a long-term relationship that turns customers into advocates in addition to building a genuine community of loyal fans. You continue to nurture the relationship and continue caring about your customers long after they've bought from you.
Why This Matters to You
Understanding and applying the customer journey can revolutionise your marketing strategy. Instead of random outreach, you can craft messages and tactics that resonate at each stage—ensuring you’re seen, trusted, and ultimately chosen.
For example, if you’re hosting an event for a new audience, focus on creating awareness first. Engage your participants, and then, over time, build that interest and trust so they feel ready to consider and convert when you present your offer.
A New Perspective on Marketing and Selling
Marketing and selling become truly natural and enjoyable when you put your customer's best interests at the forefront. By focusing on the value they seek and nurturing genuine relationships, you build a vibrant community of loyal fans—without resorting to pushy, "icky" sales tactics. As a fellow Solopreneur who deeply understands those early-stage struggles, I know that embracing an authentic, relationship-first approach not only feels right but also drives sustainable growth that aligns with your values. 🤝✨
