10 Life Lessons from Successful Creators
Hey friends,
Last week I attended a really great event at the London School of Economics, where two very successful content creators shared their top 10 Life Lessons with the audience. Their names are Sahil Bloom and Ali Abdaal. Some of you may already be aware that I've followed Ali for many years and he is one of my role models, but I had never come across Sahil until last week.
Here are some highlights from the lessons they shared:
1. Exercise in the morning before your day starts
When you do a hard thing as soon as you wake up, it gradually re-wires your mindset and you start to identify as a winner. This shapes the rest of your day, and in turn, shapes the rest of your life. Sahil wakes up before 5am every morning to do exercise - he credits his success to this one act, which he describes has a positive ripple effect on the rest of his day and therefore his life
2. Energy is a renewable resource
Some activities drain our energy, whilst other activities can renew it. Exercise is one of the activities that actually renews our energy. Identify the activities in your weekly schedule that energise you, and the activities that drain your energy. With this information, you can then be more intentional about how you use your energy, so that you don't deplete it too much on any given day
3. No one knows what they want to be when they grow up
It's ok to change your mind and to keep exploring until you find the thing that makes you feel happy and fulfilled. Most people don't figure this out until much later in life, and that's totally ok
4. No one knows the final destination
A bit like Christopher Columbus (who set sail without knowing exactly where he was going), if you don't know exactly where you will end up, you can still get started and take action by picking a DIRECTION (rather than a destination) and start exploring towards that direction. You can always change or adjust course as you discover more and the map reveals more information.
5. Focus on surrounding yourself with people who inspire you
- Who is holding you back in your life?
- Who is supporting you, encouraging you, and pushing you towards your dreams?
- Who are your mentors?
- Surrounding yourself with the right people and environment can make a huge difference in how quickly you achieve your goals and create your desired life
6. Create blank spaces if your weekly schedule where you can think
Make sure you allow time every week for you to have some breathing space. Creativity, ideas and insights often come from those quieter moments
7. The waiting room is always going to be full
Ali talked about how when he was a junior doctor working in A&E, regardless of how hard he worked and how many patients were in the waiting room, at the end of his 12 hour shift, after seeing over a dozen patients, the waiting room was STILL full. The lesson here is that life is always going to be full - full of things we COULD be doing. So, be intentional about how you spend your time, and don't try to do everything. Understand and accept that some things will not get done and that is ok. Learn to take items off your to do list and spend time on the few things that are going to make the most positive difference.
The above were the main insights I took away from the event. It was also really great to get to speak to other attendees and to network after the event. I met some really lovely and interesting people from all walks of life. Networking is the best way to expand our networks and to start opening up possibilities outside our immediate circle.
I highly recommend networking for absolutely anyone - regardless of whether you have a business or not - you will learn so much just from meeting new people you wouldn't normally meet, and you may make some really wonderful friends as well.
Wishing you a pleasant rest of the week!
With love
Marcela
