Now, let’s talk about fear.

As a coach, the number one obstacle I see my clients face daily is fear.

Fear is a natural response when we encounter something unfamiliar or when we step out of our comfort zone. It serves a purpose: it’s our protective mechanism, designed to keep us safe and alive.

We’ve all experienced the fight, flight, or freeze response when faced with uncertainty. Why does this happen? Because our brains have evolved to perceive the unknown as a potential threat. It’s a survival mechanism working overtime to shield us from danger, and the easiest way to “stay safe” is to avoid uncertainty altogether.

But while this response is helpful from a survival perspective, it can hold us back when it comes to growth and achieving our potential.

Here’s the reality: fear will always show up when we do something new. If we let fear dictate our choices, we risk staying stuck and missing out on the life we’re capable of creating.

How to Manage Fear

When fear arises, it’s important to pause and ask ourselves:

  • Is this fear serving me?
  • What’s the worst that could happen if I take this action?
  • What are the consequences of NOT taking action?

The truth is, we can’t wait for fear to disappear before taking action. Fear will be there—it’s our job to learn to navigate it.

My Fear-Filled Wins

Some of the most meaningful milestones in my life happened because I acted despite feeling fear.

Here are just a few examples:

  • Applying to medical school
  • Joining the British Army
  • Buying my first house
  • Quitting my clinical job in the NHS
  • Moving to London during the pandemic
  • Launching my Coaching business
  • Delivering a keynote to a room full of businesswomen
  • Starting tennis lessons after years of chronic pain
  • Traveling solo around Thailand for four weeks

In every single instance, I felt scared, nervous, and filled with self-doubt. But I learned to feel the fear and do it anyway (if you haven’t read Susan Jeffers’ book by this name, I highly recommend it!).

Why Facing Fear Matters

When we feel fear, we must learn to differentiate:

  • Is this fear protecting me?
  • Or is it limiting me?

Once we understand this, the next step is to take action even when fear is present. This is where growth and progress happen.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on fear and how you’ve learned to manage it! Hit reply—I read every single response.

Wishing you an amazing week ahead,

With love,

Marcela

You’ve got this, and I’m here to help you every step of the way.
